Cardinal Virtues of the Catholic Church Cardinal Virtues of the Catholic Church Catholics believe that virtues prepare and dispose people so that when the grace is offered, people readily recognize, accept, and cooperate with it. In other words, God’s grace is necessary, but virtues make it easier to work with. The Catholic Church instructs that the cardinal virtues are acquired by education, good actions, and perseverance in struggle. The last three virtues are known as theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity. They are called “theological” virtues because they relate directly to God. 1833 Virtue is a habitual and firm disposition to do good. 1834 The human virtues are stable dispositions of the intellect and the will that govern our acts, order our passions, and guide our conduct in accordance with reason and faith.

A virtue is an habitual and firm disposi A very old classification of virtues, first found in Plato 's Republic, and called "cardinal" (meaning "pivotal" and "holiness") by St. Ambrose. The Cardinal Virtues are considered by the philosophical school of ethics to be the source where all other virtues (compassion, piety, loyalty, etc.) spring from. The cardinal virtues unite the intellectual element and the affective. Much has been said recently of heart going beyond intellect in virtue; but the cardinal virtues, while concerned with the appetitive or affective parts, place prudence as the judge over all. Similarly the theological virtues place faith as the foundation of hope and charity. The adjective “cardinal” here indicates a hinge, pivot or framework upon which a classification of the virtues can be based, and I think all the characteristic virtues stressed in Craft Ritual can be brought under this classification without any strain.

Third, there are four key virtues necessary to make every act virtuous: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. In his book, The Four Cardinal Virtues, the Catholic theologian Josef Pieper explains the meaning of these four virtues. He does this in interaction with the ancient philosophers, Christian theologians, and modern philosophers.

A virtue is just a state of will that is “really good.” It is a core value and, as such, an essential part of the True Will. Here, I discuss the four cardinal virtues of Western civilization—temperance, courage, justice, and wisdom—and how we can nurture them in ourselves. 1 The following four virtues (called cardinal virtues or moral virtues) are the hinges on which the rest of the moral life swings: Prudence is basically practical common sense.
